James Gethers Jr.
Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, James Gethers Jr. is a self-taught artist living in New York City.
Much of Gethers' subject matter is inspired by his youth in South Carolina where as a child he first drew by scratching into the ground with sticks. That ephemeral expression would later transform into an extraordinary ability to marry a fleeting moment with lasting imagery.
Here, in both "In the Groove" and "Struggle", Gethers' use of pencil
is similar in effect to etching, as graphite marks, like engraved lines, mass to develop deep tones yet preserve crisp light-to-dark transitions. No external blending takes place; instead, all blurring tools are avoided and tonal structures are created by the interplay of minuscule graphite particles juxtaposed with bright paper. The result is an image alive with subtle nuances of tone and texture.
